Boris Kodjoe, the Hollywood actor born to a German mother and a Ghanaian
father, says the Black Stars of Ghana did not deserve to qualify for
the Knockout stage of the ongoing 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Soon after the Black Stars were kicked out of the tournament by Portugal on Thursday, Boris took to his Twitter account to state that the team did not even deserve a win and would be better off returning to its home country to resolve its chain of challenges.
“All in all a tumultuous WC for Ghana. Not sure if moving to the knockout stage would have been deserved. Need 2 go home n fix some things,” Boris tweeted.
The international actor had not hidden his support for the Black Stars all through the team’s stay in the tournament, so his tweet was received as an expression of concern about the recent cocktail of challenges the team had experienced.
Portugal’s win against the Black Stars completed Ghana’s disgrace at the ongoing tournament.
The international media kept an eagle eye on Ghana, as issues of player indiscipline at the Black Stars’ camp led to the coach sacking two key players – Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari.
Prior to that, the Black Stars had boycotted training sessions and issued threats of not hitting the pitch until they were paid their appearance fee.
The government of Ghana, after suffering days of intense pressure and arm-twisting, finally had to send a cash amount of over $3 million on a chartered flight from Ghana to Brazil to sort the players out.
Sports critics and analysts have said that since Ghana started qualifying for the FIFA World Cup in 2006, this year’s is the worst performance the country has recorded.
In 2006, Ghana managed to make it to the last 16 stage of the tournament - making news around the world with their impressive performance. The team in 2010 also lifted the flag of Africa high as the only promising African country to reach the quarter-finals in that tournament.
