Ghana midfielder star Michael Essien has agreed personal terms with Italian giants AC Milan as he seeks Chelsea’s approval before the much-anticipated transfer deal is sealed, GHANAsoccernet.com can exclusively reveal.
This comes after Essien’s representatives met AC Milan’s agents in London on Thursday night to negotiate personal terms before talking to Chelsea.
GHANAsoccernet.com’s sources close to the player say, the two sides reached a deal on the wages of Essien and all that is lacking now is the all clear from Chelsea.
AC Milan are willing to do a six-month loan deal for Essien or offer an 18-month permanent contract if Chelsea are prepared to sell.
If it’s a loan then Chelsea are expected to pay 50% of Essien’s wages (€5m a year).
It’s still not clear whether the deal will be on the basis of a loan with option to buy or an outright purchase this January.
With Riccardo Montolivo and Sulley Muntari suspended for the Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid and Clarence Seedorf switching to the 4-2-3-1 formation, Milan are in need for a defensive midfielder and they seem to have their man.
Essien made less than 10 appearances for Jose Mourinho’s side this season but it appears that Adriano Galliani and Seedorf believe he can reinforce the team.
The 31-year-old spent last season on loan at Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho, featuring 21 times in La Liga.
However, since Mourinho returned to Stamford Bridge – his chances with Chelsea have been limited this term and he has made just two league starts.
Now new Milan coach Clarence Seedorf is looking to add him to his squad, with one eye also on the Champions League.
Essien was not included in Chelsea’s Champions League squad this season so he is not cup tied and he could potentially play for Milan against Atletico Madrid next month.
